How To Pack:
4 Minimalist Packing Tips
In the current state of air travel, it is crucial to travel light, now more than ever.
One of the most anxiety-inducing aspects of travel for people is the act of packing.
I used to experience that stress myself.
To alleviate my packing worries, I used to bring an excess of items with me. I was a chronic over-packer. If I found myself with some leftover space in my suitcase, it felt like a rare victory. The idea of more space equaled more items. I would frantically search for additional things to fill the void, convincing myself that I might need those items, just in case.
THE SUITCASE
Let’s start with the most crucial aspect – your suitcase. Personally, I’ve always had those bulky, outdated suitcases that felt like a challenge to fit into the cramped airplane compartments. The thought of holding up the line while boarding, with judgmental eyes watching, was enough to make me break a sweat.
Given my passion for travel, I decided to be more considerate and invested in new luggage. Initially overwhelmed by the costs of luggage sets, I eventually stumbled upon a 2-piece hard-covered suitcase set that completely changed my travel experience. Not only does it effortlessly fit into the overhead compartment on the plane, but it also comes with a cup holder and a USB port! If you’re interested, you can click here to take a look!
THE BACKPACK
Whether you’re aiming to travel lighter than a suitcase or navigating foreign lands where you need to limit yourself to a personal item and a carry-on to ensure your belongings stay with you (a lesson learned from my personal experience of lost luggage due to multiple layovers), I’ve discovered the ideal bag for you!
This backpack is 17″ carry-on compatible, meaning it fits snugly under the seat while also functioning as a suitcase. Plus, it’s not just practical; it’s also aesthetically pleasing. I’ve received numerous compliments on it during my travels. If you’re interested, you can click here to take a look!
THE WARDROBE
Versatility, versatility, versatility! I’ll admit, I used to be the girl who would stuff her suitcase to the absolute max, hoping the zipper wouldn’t give in, only to arrive at my destination and realize that none of the clothing items I packed worked together. It often resulted in a one-outfit-and-done kind of situation. After several rounds of trial and error, I’ve learned my lesson.
Now, I pack my bag about a week before my trip, making sure to check the weather as I pile practically my entire closet on top of my suitcase. Later in the week, I go through a process of repacking and subtracting. Then, during the weekend of my trip, I check the weather one more time and make any final adjustments, subtracting even more items. If there’s no room to bring home at least a giant-sized sweatshirt, then I know I’ve packed too much.
So, what do I end up packing? I try to mostly stick with a neutral color palette – black, white, grey, andbeige. These versatile colors can be styled in numerous ways, allowing me to creatively re-wear outfits throughout my trip.
THE TOILETRIES
Collecting various cosmetics from ETSY and hotel samples often results in excess makeup and skincare products. Simplify your toiletries by focusing on essentials. Travel-sized and multipurpose items are your allies! Depending on the trip duration and climate, pack personal shampoo, conditioner, body wash, deodorant, razor, brush, tinted sunscreen, travel-sized toothbrush kit, face cleanser/lotion, and a first aid kit. A crucial tip for international travel: organize these items in a small, clear, resealable bag to comply with airport security rules. I’ve faced the frustration of rummaging through my bags, rearranging liquids to fit a 20cm x 20cm plastic bag allowed on most international flights. Save yourself from potential heartbreak by adjusting your toiletry list in advance based on your specific needs and travel destination. Click here for some of my favs!
THE FREEDOM
Minimalist travel isn’t solely about packing light; it’s a philosophy of embracing freedom and prioritizing experiences over possessions. I find that my most cherished souvenirs are the memories I create (which I keep account for by the magnets on my fridge). Traveling light offers you more freedom to explore. It’s simpler to hop on public transport, venture into lesser-known destinations, and adapt to unexpected changes in your itinerary. <3
Remember, minimal travel isn’t about deprivation; it’s about liberation. By packing light, you free yourself to live large, to truly savor the essence of your journey. Where will your next adventure take you?
